On The Line

Yorgos Lanthimos is the director of the Oscar-tipped period comedy 'The Favourite', and was in Dublin just before Christmas. Brian caught up with him to talk working with Irish people, going from 'The Killing Of A Sacred Deer' to 'The Favourite', spending nine years on its script, and much more besides.

Yann directs Matthew McConaughey's new movie White Boy Rick, which tells the true story of a teenager who became an undercover informant for the FBI before being arrested for drug-trafficking during the 1980s.   Yann and I talk about the film, how he found its young star Richie Merritt, and what it was like working with McConaughey.    The director and I also talked about his first feature '71 which is a Troubles set drama about a young British soldier who has to survive the night in Belfast after being accidentally abandoned by his unit.   Yann told me about working with the Irish cast, who included Barry Keoghan, and about similar themes between White Boy Rick and '71.   Lastly, Yann talks about his name being circulated around the Bond franchise.   I hope you enjoy this interview, make sure to like and subscribe to On the Line. We chat to Ruth Wilson about the new film 'The Little Stranger', which is directed by Irish Oscar nominee Lenny Abrahamson and co-stars Domhnall Gleeson. We also chat about Ruth's renowned show 'The Affair', looking back on her fondest memories from the series and considering what could be in store for its next and final season.

Dave Bautista, renowned as Drax in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, stars in new film ‘Final Score’, which sees him rescue thousands of spectators at a football match from terrorists. Dave talked to Deirdre Molumby about the prospect of being an action lead, and why his co-star on the movie, Pierce Brosnan, is such a gent. Dave talked about ‘Guardians’ and how his career has shot off in recent years. He also shares with us projects he has lined up and what his favourite movies are in this ON THE LINE podcast.

Scott Mann’s third feature, ‘Final Score’, marks his best to date. It portrays Dave Bautista as an ex-solider forced to rescue thousands of spectators at a football match from terrorists. Mann talked to Deirdre Molumby on this ON THE LINE podcast about the film, working with Dave and the action movies that inspired ‘Final Score’ – in particular ‘Die Hard’. Mann also had anecdotes to share about Robert De Niro and Pierce Brosnan, and told us what we can look forward to seeing from him next.

Best known for his roles in 'Sherlock', 'Doctor Who' and of course 'The League Of Gentlemen', not to mention his extensive career as a screenwriter, Mark Gatiss is a man of many talents and many opinions - and shared some of them with Fiona Flynn on this episode of ON THE LINE, where he was deep in rehearsals for the upcoming arena tour for 'The League Of Gentlemen'.

With his directorial debut, 'Hotel Artemis', released in cinemas from this week, Dee talked to Drew Pearce about the challenges of writing and directing for the first time, the disparate influences on the film like 'The Shining' and 'Casablanca', Jodie Foster somehow getting a hold of the script for 'Hotel Artemis' and coming out of semi-retirement for it, and much more.

Jay Chandrasekhar is best known for two things - directing and starring in 'Super Troopers' and 'Super Troopers 2', and an innate understanding of moustaches - and both of these were discussed at length in our interview with him, where he argued the finer points of Burt Reynolds' facial hair in 'Boogie Nights' and why Brian Cox, CBE  thought he was going to be the next Jerry Lewis.

Doug Stanhope is no stranger to Ireland and is headed back to the Olympia in the coming weeks with a new show that, as specifically stated in this episode, he will not divulge to anyone. Fair enough. Dee talked to Doug about visiting Ireland, drinking, not mentioning Donald Trump's name in his set, and if Netflix is actually a force for good for comedians.

Although it's her first film as director, Nora Twomey's debut work - The Breadwinner - has already garnered an Academy Award nomination, brought on Angelina Jolie as an executive producer, and is one of the most talked-about animated films of the year so far. Dee Molumby, Staff Writer at entertainment.ie, spoke to Nora about the pressures and prestige of working on a film with Oscar buzz attached and some of her all-time favourite animated films - one of which just so happens to be Kung Fu Panda 2.

Greg Sestero's probably best known for one role in his career - as the pretty boy Mark in Tommy Wiseau's cult comedy-drama-thriller-schlockfest The Room. Staff Writer Deirdre Molumby talked to Sestero when he was in town to promote his new film, Best F(R)iends, his first time working with Wiseau since The Room, about how coping with being recognised is treating him and what Tommy Wiseau is *actually* like.
